Did You Know

Jamaica like so many other island nations in the Caribbean has discovered that tourism and ecology can go hand-in-hand.

You may think of Jamaica as a place where beaches and reggae music set the scene, but look inland and you will find a mountainous landscape with volcanic origins and tropical rainforests.

The natural beauty of the island and the lure of tourist dollars have combined to generate an entire industry of eco-tourism adventures in Jamaica.

Visitors to the island will find several excursions away from the major cities that utilize the natural features of Jamaica to their best advantage.

Eco Adventures Excursions

Martha Brae River

The Martha Brae River is home to an unique river rafting adventure.

Guest are escorted onto bamboo rafts crafted solely from the island's bamboo vegetation. Bamboo is a quick growing plant and is an environmentally sensitive choice for raft construction.

The bamboo that grows in Jamaica only flowers once every thirty-three years. The next time will be in 2017.

While cruisign down the Martha Brae, your guide will direct your attention to the more than five hundred species of plant life found on the land, and more than half of which are native to the island.

Dunn's River Falls

Picturesque Dunn's River Falls, near Ocho Rios, is another not to be missed site.

You can climb the falls or choose to walk up the man-made stairway adjacent to the falls.

Experience the thrill and the rush of the water as you take in the surrounding natural vistas.

Jamaica's Bobsled Team

Anyone who is an Olympics fan will no doubt remember the Jamaican Bobsled Team of 1988.

Combine the Olympic bobsled theme with an environmentally sensitive thrill ride and you have Rainforest Jamaica on Mystic Mountain near Ocho Rios.

It is one part bobsled and one part eco-tour, but it is all fund and one of the ways you can learn why Jamaica is known as the "Land of Wood and Water".

Your bobsled will take down 330 feet of twists and turns as you wind your way down the mountain, from the cool mountainous air into the humid tropical zone of the rainforest.

Zip Line Adventure

Another adventure found on Jamaica for the thrill seekers are zip line tours also on Mystic Mountain.

Take your plunge from heights at a bit slower pace than the bobsled and marvel at the wondrous variety of flora and fauna as you descend to your termination point.

Hiking and Horseback Riding

Hiking and horseback riding are also popular eco-adventures in Jamaica.

Expert guides will escort you at a leisurely pace through mountains, rainforests, and the coastal plains. You can visit some of the secluded lagoons that are found on the coasts or discover where mangoes are grown.

Environmentally Sensitive Adventures

You can experience an exhilarating adventure in Jamaica while being environmentally sensitive to the balance of nature on the island.

Just chose an eco-tour that has the right balance of fun and education and you will have a vacation that you wont'soon forget.
